Aesthetic of Non-Aesthetic in Modern Cinema

Showing graphic violence in films is a three-dimensional thing which is consisting of viewers, scriptwriters, and filmmakers. As a scriptwriter, you have to convince the viewers how violence becomes a necessity, who deserves it and who has a right to act violent, and who has not.

Ancient Greek tragedies storylines are based on the sin and punishment aspect. Greek tragedians were establishing their dramas on the attitude of the people of Athens and how they should not forget their place in mythical gods view. They must always remember that they are mortals otherwise goddess Nemesis will punish them and she has the right to do who deserves punishment. These are the first dramatic storytelling example of creating good & bad and who deserve legitimate punishment and violence. Nemesis.

Understanding of a ''high ruler decides the fate, crime and punishment'' evolved in different places of society. Sometimes it's the emperor who gives punishment to people, sometimes it's the people who give punishment to the emperor. It all depends on who is stronger than the other at that certain moment. Gladiator games in ancient Rome, public hangings in middle age, public trials of modern days.

Since the invention of cinema, dramatic storytelling has been changed by different standpoints like cinematography and editing. Actors are not transparent as on stage anymore. Film narratives created different timelines and this affected how viewers react to dramas.

After cinema evolved from a ''new invention'' to ''profit-making meta'' producers have been responded to viewers' needs. Depending on those needs classical cinema found new narrations and creative storylines and modern film narrative born.

In classical movies, the narrative is told in chronological order. There is also a cause-effect logic that leads the audience from one scene to the next.
The movie starts by introducing the characters, then one event leads to the other until the conflict arises. The characters work on overcoming this conflict until they reach a resolution at the end.

Violence in film is as old as the cinema itself. From early film history in its various forms, it has been always present. But it has been changed to the audience's needs and expectations at a certain time. Now, protagonists can also be good and bad such as vigilantes and anti-heroes. Their motive and visual representation of violence changed and now we don't just watch basic so-called hero movies with their politically correct motives and safely visualized violent acts anymore.
