Aesthetic of Non-Aesthetic

 

Showing graphic violence in films is a three-dimensional thing which is consisting of viewers, scriptwriters, and filmmakers. As a scriptwriter, you have to convince the viewers how violence becomes a necessity, who deserves it and who has a right to act violent, and who has not. 

Ancient Greek tragedies storylines are based on the sin and punishment aspect. Greek tragedians were establishing their dramas on the attitude of the people of Athens and how they should not forget their place in mythical gods view. They must always remember that they are mortals otherwise goddess Nemesis will punish them and she has the right to do who deserves punishment. These are the first dramatic storytelling example of creating good & bad and who deserve legitimate punishment and violence. Nemesis. 

This understanding of a ''high ruler decides the fate, crime and punishment'' evolved in different places of society. Sometimes it's the emperor who gives punishment to people, sometimes it's the people who give punishment to the emperor. It all depends on who is stronger than the other at that certain moment. Gladiator games in ancient Rome, public hangings in middle age, public trials of modern days.  


The dramatic storyline evolved in the thousands of years of theater and it has been affected by the social-political situation of their own eras. But the understanding of violence did not change. People want to see more violence, more crimes and after all someone who give the ''right'' punishment which leads us viewer's aspect. ''Schadenfreude'' which means the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another. Which leads us that viewers are also the reason why storytellers are choosing an aesthetic violence. So in a lot of ways violence in movies and theater are all based on what the audience expects and what storytellers have to give them.
